Norani Qaida Online — The Essential First Step for Every Quran Learner

The Norani Qaida is the world’s most trusted and widely used method for teaching Quran reading from absolute scratch. Before any student can read the Holy Quran, they must first learn the Arabic alphabet, vowel sounds, and how letters join together to form words. At Al Huda Quran Teaching, our online Norani Qaida course is taught by patient, specialist teachers who are highly experienced in teaching Arabic reading to complete beginners — both young children and adults. Whether your child has never seen an Arabic letter, or you are an adult Muslim who wants to finally learn to read the Quran, this course is your starting point.

What You Will Learn — Full Norani Qaida Curriculum

Lesson 1 — Arabic Alphabet (Huroof Al-Hijaiyya)

The course begins with the 29 Arabic letters — learning to recognise each letter visually, pronounce it correctly from its Makhruj (articulation point), and write its name. Special focus is given to letters that are commonly confused by English speakers.

  • Recognition of all 29 Arabic letters in isolated form
  • Correct pronunciation of each letter from its articulation point
  • Letter names: Ba, Ta, Tha, Jeem, Ha, Kha…
  • Distinguishing similar-looking letters: ب/ت/ث, ح/خ/ج, ر/ز, س/ش

Lesson 2 — Short Vowels (Harakat)

Arabic vowel marks (Harakat) determine how letters are pronounced. This lesson teaches the three short vowels — Fatha (a), Kasra (i), and Damma (u) — and how they change the sound of any letter they are attached to.

  • Fatha ( َ ) — the ‘a’ sound above the letter
  • Kasra ( ِ ) — the ‘i’ sound below the letter
  • Damma ( ُ ) — the ‘u’ sound above the letter
  • Reading any letter with any vowel fluently

Lesson 3 — Sukoon, Shaddah & Tanween

Sukoon (no vowel), Shaddah (doubled letter), and Tanween (double vowels at word end) are essential signs that appear throughout the Quran. Misreading these is one of the most common errors in Quran recitation.

  • Sukoon — the stopping sign that removes a vowel sound
  • Shaddah — doubling of a letter with increased emphasis
  • Tanween — double Fatha, Kasra, Damma at word endings
  • Practice reading words with all three signs correctly

Lesson 4 — Long Vowels (Madd Letters)

Long vowels extend the sound of a short vowel by elongating it. The three long vowel letters — Alif, Waw, and Ya — appear frequently throughout the Quran and must be pronounced with the correct length.

  • Madd with Alif — extending the Fatha sound
  • Madd with Waw — extending the Damma sound
  • Madd with Ya — extending the Kasra sound
  • Introduction to the concept of Madd length (2 beats)

Lesson 5 — Joining Letters & Word Reading

Arabic letters change shape depending on their position in a word — beginning, middle, end, or isolated. This lesson teaches students to recognise all letter and join them together to read complete Arabic words fluently.

  • Initial, medial, final, and isolated letter forms
  • Joining 2, 3, and 4-letter words progressively
  • Reading practice with Quranic vocabulary words
  • Building reading speed while maintaining accuracy

Lesson 6 — Short Surah Practice

The final stage of the Norani Qaida applies all learned skills to reading actual Quranic text. Students read short Surahs from Juz Amma — the most commonly recited part of the Quran in daily prayers — applying everything they have learned.

  • Surah Al-Fatiha — the opening chapter of every prayer
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas — short essential Surahs
  • Surah Al-Kawthar, Al-Asr, Al-Fil
  • Reading with correct pronunciation and basic Tajweed marks
